About us
In the year 2003, the Department was started with the objective to impart media education to students and to meet the demands of the digital era. Under Autonomy, the Department introduced innovative, need-based courses that help students to get hands-on experience with a focus on blending art and technology to communicate ideas and information. The course encompasses a wide range of field projects like Television Production, Non-Linear Editing, Drawing, Graphic Designing, Digital Photography, Creative Video Making, Web Designing, Commercial Advertising, 3D and 2D Animation and Visual Effects. The course is complemented by media internship, lab exercise, field trips and study tours. The Department uses its links with industry experts to provide Interactive sessions for the students both on and off campus.

Highlights
The Development Communication Campaign on “#Why Vote”
Objective:
The main objective of the Development Communication Campaign “#Why Vote” is to
create awareness on voting for youngsters and how to be responsible citizens. The final year students conducted this social media campaign to research and understand the new media, and utilise the medium for the welfare of society, to educate first time voters on the importance of voting and why their vote matters for the Tamil Nadu election 2021.

Outcome :
The guest speaker Mr. Joshua Gerard, Founder and President of the NGO Chitra Foundation addressed the students on “How to make decisions on casting vote” and “why vote matters”. The students produced information videos on how youngsters can take part in the democratic process, how to be responsible citizens and created awareness for the voters in the social media platform.
The highlights of the campaign
- Resourceful Posters were posted in the Social Media Platforms
- Animated Videos in Instagram, Facebook and Youtube stories for the period of two weeks
- Mime videos enacted by the students were posted in the social media timeline.
All the posters and videos had commendable ‘likes’ and ‘shares’.
A one-day seminar on “Emerging Trends in Social Media: Novelty and Entrepreneurship” was organised to familiarise students with new digital products and services and how to utilise YouTube at best for their entrepreneurial ventures. The seminar focussed on the nuances of the YouTube platform in terms of innovation, media packages, ethical considerations, social media marketing and funding.
One day Community Development Programme was organised on April 1st 2020, by the final year students on creating awareness on Climate Change and Consumerism titled “The ME Project” in the Department of Visual Communication, WCC, Chennai. The college students were educated on how to mitigate the effects of Climate Change and on the roles young people can play, for the same.
