About us
The subject of Psychology is both interesting and valuable. Psychology is a tremendously diverse field-psychologists specialise in many different aspects of behaviour and cognition. Psychology embodies not only a body of knowledge but is also a way of looking at and understanding the world around us.
The Department of Psychology at WCC has a glorious history of almost half a century. The Department which commenced in 1973 with an undergraduate programme in Psychology, introduced a postgraduate programme in Psychology in 1989. Very soon the Department grew to become a research Department with M.Phil. (since 2002) and Ph.D. in Psychology (since 2005).
In addition, the Department manages the following projects- ‘Vikaas’-Student Counselling Centre; Nalam Psychological Counselling Services and Child Development Centre which offers rehabilitation services to the intellectually challenged.
The undergraduate programme attempts to build a strong theoretical foundation in Psychology combined with practical application. This serves as a platform to move into higher studies both in India and in Universities outside India. The postgraduate programme offers two specialisations in Counselling and Psychotherapy and Organisational Behaviour.
The pedagogy of Psychology is offered by experienced faculty by using various learning modalities, with a strong emphasis on making the learning process both interactive and inclusive. The Department hopes to develop sound professionals with a scientific temper who can carry out their work in various fields of Psychology and allied fields with integrity, commitment and sensitivity. The work of the Alumnae of the Department who have excelled in various fields speaks for the quality of education imparted.

FACILITIES
The Child Development Centre, a project of the Psychology Department caters to intellectually challenged children. This supports the following PG courses- Community Psychology, Psychological Testing and Counselling. CDC children enthusiastically participate and win prizes in various events. Various events and programmes are held with the support of students from the Psychology Department and Extension Activities.
The Department takes pride in its collection of materials utilised for teaching students how to conduct and interpret various psychological assessments in the areas of Intelligence – Memory, Aptitude, Personality and Career tests to name a few. The equipment is constantly updated with the latest additions in the field. Post graduate students learn how to administer and apply psychological tests in Counselling related fields and in organisations, which adds substantially to their range of professional skills.
