Department of Tamil

About us

The Department of Tamil (Shift-II) was started in 1998. The Tamil Department offers the language Tamil to all the first year UG students and second year B.A (Corporate Economics), B.Sc (Visual Communication and Psychology) students under Part I.  Under part IV  NME courses like Advanced Tamil and Beginners Tamil are offered by the Department. From the year 2017 onwards skill papers (Tamil Soft skill – basic, Tamil Soft skill – Advanced, Tourism in Tamil, Tourism and Tamil culture) are offered for Post Graduate students. The Tamil Department has one full time staff and six guest lecturers.

Student strength:

556 students (I Year), 79 students (II Year) have enrolled for Tamil Part I language for the current academic year. Around 226 students have registered for Non Major Elective courses (Beginners Tamil and Advanced Tamil) and 37 students (I Year PG) have registered for SKB courses.

Activities:

The Department also has a club (Tamil Ilakkiya Mandram-Shift-II), which encourages students to take part in debates, dramatics and creative writing. ‘The Tamil Ilakkiya Mandram (Shift-II) of Women’s Christian College, conducted a intercollege culturals named ‘Kavin Kalai Vizha’. The Tamil and Languages Department of Shift II together held an intracollege culturals named ‘Tahifre Carnival’. The Department organizes various co-curricular and extracurricular activities like Seminars, Guest Lectures, Cultural Activities & Exhibitions. Tamil department and P.G Department of Communication and English together conducted a seminar on “Gender and Caste” “Narratives on Media, Culture and Society” an International conference   conducted by the Departments of  PG Communication, UG Visual Communication &  Tamil (Shift-II), Women’s Christian College, Chennai. On 28.03.2023 & 29.03.2023.

Highlights:

The Tamil section offers courses that highlight the cultural heritage of Tamil Nadu – Tourism. Project works in Tourism enhance the creative skills of the students in the language. The students are encouraged to write on their own place of birth (Tourism). PG – SKB Tourism and Tamil Culture girls were taken to Pondicherry which was given as their assignment.

Programmes Offered:

The Department of Tamil offers Tamil under Part I at the U.G. level. This course is spread over the first two semesters for B.Com., BBA., BCA., CST. with B.Sc.Visual Communication, B.A.Corporate Economics and Psychology students doing it for four semesters. The development of students’ communication skills is given prime importance while planning the curriculum. Works of literary excellence are chosen to give an insight into the linguistic culture and heritage of the Tamil language.

Under part IV NME courses like Advanced Tamil and Beginners Tamil are offered. Skill papers (Tamil Soft skill – basic, Tamil Soft skill – Advanced, Tourism in Tamil, Tourism and Tamil culture) are offered for Post Graduate students.
