The word Cassia is derived from the Greek name, kassia and fistula mean ‘pipes’ since the pods hang like long pipes. Cassia fistula is also known as the Indian Laburnum as it resembles English Laburnum. The tree blooms during summer with beautiful bright yellow cascading flower clusters, earning the name ‘Yellow Shower’. The flowers are also used for pooja, particularly during the Vishu festival in Kerala. Bark is extensively used for tanning and dyeing and in Ayurveda for the treatment of inflammatory swellings and as a cleaning agent for ulcers and wounds. It is believed to decrease purulent discharge and act as a local antiseptic. The fruits are also used as a laxative. |
