About us
The Department of Psychology gained the status of a research department in 2002, with the introduction of the M.Phil. programme.
The M.Phil. programme focusses on developing a strong research culture where culturally relevant and ethically validated research is carried out in both basic and applied aspects of Psychology. The students learn to mentor the postgraduate and undergraduate students of the Department sharpening their own research acumen in the process. They are encouraged to attend multifarious conferences and seminars, present research papers and publish in prominent academic journals.

M.Phil students carry out empirical research work, as part of their dissertations. Research is both applied and basic covering various areas such as Educational, Social, Organisational, Consumer, Rehabilitation, Health and Clinical Psychology in addition to construction and standardization of various Psychological tests that would be applicable to the Indian contexts. Research is also encouraged at the undergraduate level. The faculty members of the Psychology Department have numerous publications in National and International peer reviewed journals. Students at all levels actively take part in paper presentations in Conferences and Symposiums and have won prizes as well.
The faculty of the Department constantly update their expertise in research by attending various Conferences/ workshops organised at the State, National and International levels. A UGC Major Research project and Minor research project have been successfully completed by the Department.
Workshops are being organised regularly for post graduate students and research scholars on Research methodology and use of SPSS. Students learn to be ethically responsible researchers as well as sensitive to the needs of the community. They learn the skills of scientific report writing using APA format. Two doctorates of the Department are manuscript editors of prestigious International level Psychology journals. All researches are permitted to be carried out only after approval is obtained from the Independent Ethics Committee which has been formulated based on ICMR guidelines.

FACILITIES
The Child Development Centre, a project of the Psychology Department caters to intellectually challenged children. This supports the following PG courses- Community Psychology, Psychological Testing and Counselling. CDC children enthusiastically participate and win prizes in various events. Various events and programmes are held with the support of students from the Psychology Department and Extension Activities.
The Department takes pride in its collection of materials utilised for teaching students how to conduct and interpret various psychological assessments in the areas of Intelligence – Memory, Aptitude, Personality and Career tests to name a few. The equipment is constantly updated with the latest additions in the field. Post graduate students learn how to administer and apply psychological tests in Counselling related fields and in organisations, which adds substantially to their range of professional skills.
