B.Sc. Home Science Nutrition, Food Service Management and Dietetics (Vocational Stream)

About us

The Department of Home Science, Women’s Christian College, Chennai, housed in the Mason Block, was started in the year 1942 under the able leadership of Dr. Eleanor D. Mason, an educationist and a visionary. This was a pioneering department to offer Home Science both at the Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels, with the main purpose of empowering women by inculcating skills and knowledge required for a Holistic Healthy Lifestyle. Under the umbrella of Home Science, the Department in the 78th year of its establishment offers Undergraduate, Postgraduate, M.Phil. and Ph.D. Programmes in the field of Nutrition, Food Service Management and Dietetics.

The Department of Home Science offers two undergraduate programmes. The B.Sc., Nutrition, Food Service Management and Dietetics programme (General stream) helps students integrate theoretical knowledge and its practical application in the fields of Food Science, Nutritional Sciences, Food service Management, Textiles, Human Development, and Interior Decoration through practical sessions, projects, entrepreneurial and service-learning programmes

The B.Sc., Nutrition, Food Service Management and Dietetics (Vocational Stream) programme offers a sound theoretical base in the fields of Food Science, Nutritional Sciences, Food Service Management, Human Development, Interior Decoration and Textiles. The programme provides practical skills for entrepreneurship and careers in the various fields of Home Science through practical sessions, projects and experiential learning.

The Department has 14 well qualified, dedicated and experienced faculty with Doctorates in different areas of specialisation such as Food Service Management, Foods and Nutrition, Child Development and Textiles and Clothing. The teachers of the Department are actively involved in research and publication. The faculty strives to provide highest quality educational experience for the students by exposing them to current research in the field of Nutrition. Care is taken to revise the curriculum periodically with inputs from subject experts in International and National Universities as well as industry experts to keep abreast of the recent trends and also enhance career opportunities for students.

The Department has been actively engaged in serving the community by way of research, extension activities, community-based nutrition programmes, and organising workshops, conferences and symposia both at the National and International levels. The Department has an in-house Centre for Nutrition-Counselling, Research and Extension Activities (CNCREA) whose objective is to create awareness on primary prevention of non-communicable diseases, by way of community-based research and extension activities. Newer courses in the existing branches of Home Science have not only opened up avenues for action-based research and community nutrition programmes, but have also paved the way for future entrepreneurial ventures.

The Department also runs the Women’s Christian College Laboratory Nursery, a project that has been functional since its inception in 1971.  It has been providing quality care and learning opportunities to children in the age group of 2 ½ to 3 ½ years and has proved to be truly a home away from home. It serves the college community and the community at large by offering a pre-kindergarten course that fosters holistic development.
