B.Sc. Advanced Zoology & Biotechnology

About us

The Department of Advanced Zoology and Biotechnology caters to the challenging demands of the learners in the emerging field of Biotechnology by developing an inclusive learning environment. The Department began as an offshoot of Natural Science and started functioning as a full-fledged independent unit in the year 1922 offering Zoology at Major and Ancillary levels. In the year 1982, the Department introduced new, innovative need-based courses in the curriculum utilising the freedom given under Autonomy. In 1994 the department was chosen by the UGC to offer Biotechnology as a Vocational Training Course at the UG level, on an interdisciplinary basis. The curriculum is tailored to provide a strong foundational understanding of concepts in development of organisms, dynamics of cells, basics of Genetics, Biochemistry and Immunology, ecological interactions with environmental implications coupled with tools in Bioinformatics. This prepares students to apply their knowledge to specialisations in diverse and rapidly evolving areas of Biology and Biotechnology. The Vocational Training Program has enabled the department to have links with industries, state of the art laboratories, reputed hospitals and research departments of universities and research foundations.. The Learner Designed Courses offer advanced learners to earn extra credits in a self-learning mode with guidance from a faculty facilitator. From 2004, Choice Based Credit System is introduced wherein students have the option to choose from a wide variety of courses offered by the parent and other departments.
