Role of the Alumnae Association at WCC
The Alumnae Association runs the McDougall Memorial Nursery School that was started in 1943 by Marjorie Sykes, faculty in the English Department of the College, hailing from Great Britain. It functions on its own property to impart sound basic education to the underprivileged and marginalised children in and around Gream Road. A well-balanced diet from the morning milk to the evening snacks , two sets of free uniforms with shoes & socks, study materials and activities are all taken care of through donations from the Alumnae and friends and proceeds from the annual “Food Fair”. The salary of the teachers is met with the Grant from the Government. The syllabus for LKG and UKG are on par with other private and established schools. They are taken out on Education Trips at least twice a year.
Activities
*Dr. Elizabeth George Scholarship Fund
Instituted in memory of the First Indian Principal, an annual prize of Rs.2000/- is given to a student who joins the B.Ed.course immediately after graduation at WCC based on “merit & need”.
*A scholarship for a needy ward of the Staff (especially the sub-staff) is extended every year.
*Dr. Florence Theophilus Prize
- For the student scoring the highest mark in Physiology in the M.Sc.Foods and Nutrition & Food Service Management & Dietetics class.
- For the student scoring the highest mark in Ms.Sc Food Service Management and Dietetics class.
*Good Samaritan Fund to reach out to those who need treatment in life-threatening health situations.
* Outreach programme at the Telugu Centre, Chetput
- It runs a Balwadi, a tailoring unit to teach young women, and a therapy centre for spastic children.
- A sum of Rs.10,000/- is given annually.
*Any Conference (National/International) is assured of a contribution.
*The Madhavi & Ebenezer Michael Award
It recognises an Alumna who has distinguished herself in Community Service.
*In 2003, the Alumnae Association contributed to the landscaping of the College campus especially the Physics and Chemistry quadrangle.
*In 2016-17, an R.O. plant was donated to the College, to meet the needs of the students for clean drinking water.
*In 2020, arrangements were made to set the clock of the Clock Tower to chime again.
The work is delayed due to the unexpected lockdown.
