About us

The PG Department of Physics was established in 1999 to facilitate an environment to inculcate academic and research skills to students and has grown in leaps and bounds over these 20 years.

Originally the programme was affiliated to the Madras University till 2005 during which the students had bagged various university ranks in consecutive years. The programme became autonomous in 2005 and has been offering multi-disciplinary courses in potential areas along with a strong foundation in Masters level Physics under the CBCS pattern. Students are given a wide scope for internships and dissertation in premier academic and research institutions. The Department curriculum has gained wide appreciation in the academic circle over the years.

The Department is widely known for its laboratory facility and training. In addition to the laboratories required for the curriculum, a Material Science research laboratory is available in the Department wherein students can pursue research in basic material science, and present and publish their dissertation work.

A gamut of opportunities to improve various skill sets, team building capacity, leadership ability and social work are offered to students. They are motivated to exhibit and enhance their inherent talents and skills  – be it  in organising an event or  deftly designing some art or craft , participating in paper/poster presentations during conferences or displaying scientific ideas and concepts during intercollegiate competitions. To encourage and develop these interests, the PG Hi-Phy Association was started in 2016 aiming to hone talents and augment leadership, event management and entrepreneurship skills.  20 years has indeed been a remarkable journey for the Department and it has grown wonderfully by the grace of God.
