The genus name Tabebuia refers to the antresistant wood. The species name argentea refers to the silvery cast of the leaves. The tree has beautiful yellow flowers hence its other name ‘Tree of Gold’. It is used as a drink, medicine and source of materials. It is sometimes grown as a hedge and is often grown as an ornamental and a street tree. It is cultivated throughout the tropics for their showy flowers.
There are two trees on campus. The older of the two near the chapel and the other in the lawn adjacent to the clock tower.
