About us

Welcome to the Department of Chemistry

Chemistry often referred to as the Central Science, plays a pivotal role in all aspects of physical & biological sciences, engineering, agriculture, medicine, and allied health disciplines.

Chemistry was taught as one of the subjects in the college as early as 1918, however it became a full fledged degree programme in the year 1953. Since then the Department of Chemistry at Women’s Christian College has been engaged in opening up the fascinating world of Chemistry to students many of whom have gone on to make a mark for themselves in society both in India and abroad.  The Postgraduate programme  was introduced in the year 2007 under the self-financed section of the college.

The Undergraduate programme has been designed to provide  basic foundation in general areas of Inorganic, Organic and Physical chemistry in the first and second year of study. Specialised courses such as Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Nanoscience, Forensic Science, Cosmetics & Personal Grooming, Printing and Dyeing of Textiles, Essentials of Food Chemistry etc. are offered at the core and supporting (allied) level to acquaint the students with the areas of application of Chemistry. The facilities in the Department were augmented to support basic research using the grants received under Star College Scheme of Department of Biotechnology (DBT) in the year 2015, DST-FIST in 2016 and CPE UGC in 2016.

An aptitude for research is instilled in students by engaging them in individual or group project work in the third year of the degree programme. Research at the undergraduate level is also promoted by the funding available for the Department under the Mr. Ramakrishnan Research Fund for UG research. The Department also has the distinction of having completed one major research project funded by DST and a minor research project funded by UGC. The Department publishes an annual Chemistry magazine CHEMMAG to document and showcase the activities of the Department and also to bring out the creativity and writing skills of the students. The Department has a student chapter of  the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) that opens up new vistas in education, research and guidance for their career.
